Visiting museums is a relaxing and enjoyable way to broaden one’s horizons. Hence, some suggest thatthe admission should be free. They believe that free access is essential to provide people with cultural andeducational opportunities. Besides, it can also boost the number of visitors, which consequently will helpbuild the general national pride and promote cross-cultural understanding. In the long run, this will alsoexert substantial influence over the prosperity of the nation.In contrast, those against the suggestion claim that museums need to charge entrance fees in order tosurvive in the moder world. Furthermore, the govemment does not have sufficient funds to subsidize allinstitutions and there are other priorities for the government to fund. And free admission will only result in adecline in the field. What’s worse, funded by the government, the museums will no longer care about thenumber of their visitors, and thus will stop catering to the needs of customers to produce popular exhibitionsand offer convenient services.
I believe there is no clear answer to this question as there are such strong arguments on both sides.Perhaps it is possible for some museums to charge fees and for others not to. It will depend on the individualsituation of museums.
