CELShould College Students Undertake Unpaid Work in the Community?Nowadays, it is a common phenomenon that college students are willing to work in the community forfree. Some people hold the view that young students should make time for unpaid social work. They believethat what students learn from social work will lay a solid foundation for their future career. What’smore, they think young people can get guidance for their development in the community. The final point theyinsist is that it’s a huge financial expenditure for the local government to employ adults to do the same work.Nevertheless, those with opposite opinions believe that unpaid social work may influence students’ studybecause they need to take time off from study to undertake the job. They also think the irritability of youngpeople makes it difficult for the community to avoid or reconcile disputes among them. Moreover, thedisparity among those volunteers increases the workload of the local governments to assign them theappropriate task.
In my view, despite those drawbacks of voluntary social work, college students should still beencouraged to do unpaid work in the community. Since young people may always get lost under the controlof the utilitarian idea, it’s better for them to think less about themselves and do more for thecommunity.
