Is Chinese Parenting Superior to Western Parenting? In recent years, “tiger mother” has been a hot topic in our society. “Tiger mother” is a very strict Chinesemother who forces her children to study hard and restricts their free time so that they can achieve the highestgrades. Many Chinese parents set high standards for their kids and push them to study and practice to ensure theirchildren’s success in the future competition. And the phrase “tiger mother” has been regarded as a synonym fora strict education mode.
However, the opposite method of Finland’s education system is also brought into public focus nowadays, which is called as “sheep mother”. People who advocate this kind of education mode believe that education is a”service” and children are “customers”. Therefore, there are only general objectives but no concrete syllabus, and teachers can use any method as long as most children can reach the goals. Western parents try to respecttheir children’s individuality, encouraging them to pursue their true passions, and providing positivereinforcement and a nurturing environment. By contrast, Chinese parents believe that the best way to protecttheir children is to prepare them for the future, letting them see what they’re capable of, and arming them withskills, work habits and inner confidence that no one can ever take away.As far as I am concerned, both of the education modes have their advantages and disadvantages. Everyoneshould be aware that the growh of children is not confined to obtaining book knowledge, but requires moral andphysical education, etc. Thus, parents have to combine the advantages of both parties with their children’s actualsituation so that they can adjust their specific strategies for raising their children. As an old saying goes, “Allthings in their being are good for something.” Parents should be confident of their own children no matterwhich education mode they adopt.
